I’m obsessed with podcasts and I promise I’m not exaggerating. Listening to podcasts is like watching tv without having to pay close attention with your eyes. They’re a multitasker’s dream. As self-appointed queen of the multitaskers, I listen to different podcasts that match my mood while cleaning, working, driving, or even journaling. My favorite podcasts immediately improve my mood!
I can barely keep up with all of the podcasts episodes that I subscribed to on Spotify. But I listen and subscribe anyway.
Here are my favorite podcasts at the moment:
Office Ladies (Comedy)
The Office is in my top 10 favorite shows of all time. (Fun fact: I once watched the entire series three times in a row within a week. My favorite episode is THE best episode: Stress Relief Part 1. “The fire’s shooting at us!” *in my best Andy Bernard voice*.) So when Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela) announced that they were joining forces to make a re-watch podcast of The Office, I was so excited and anticipated the first episode.
Jenna and Angela do not disappoint; I laugh along each week as they recap episodes and provide behind-the-scenes insight. Check it out if you’re a fan of The Office. And for those of you who have somehow managed to make it this far without watching this show (I have no idea how you haven’t succumbed to the peer pressure), now is a great time to start.
Office Ladies is definitely one of my top two favorite podcasts at the moment!
True Crime All the Time (True Crime)
TCAT (as hosts Mike and Gibby call it) is the first podcast I ever listened to a couple of years ago. I love watching true crime television shows and documentaries like Snapped and Dateline, so basically anything on the Oxygen channel. It’s no surprise that I love true crime podcasts.
Mike and Gibby discuss a different murderer each episode. I love TCAT because I learn about well-known murders, but also several lesser known killers. I highly recommend TCAT if you enjoy true crime.
Crime Junkies (True Crime)
Surprise, another true crime podcast!
If you enjoy true crime, then I’m sure you’ve heard of Ashley Flowers and Brit. These two have voices that are well-suited for podcast work. Each episode, Ashley and Brit discuss various crimes, from solved and unsolved murders, to missing people cases.
Also, Ashley released a horror story podcast called Full Body Chills for Halloween 2019. I love watching horror movies, but was skeptical about how horror would translate to the podcast medium. Ashely did not disappoint. The stories on Full Body Chills are thrilling and attention-grabbing. Check it out if you haven’t already!
Therapy for Black Girls (Lifestyle)
This podcast promotes mental and physical health and personal development. Per the podcast’s website, the goal is to assist listeners in becoming the best possible version of yourself. It is obvious why I fell in love! Whether discussing grief, anxiety, vulnerability, or the latest episode of HBO’s Insecure, there is an episode for everyone.
This podcast gets extra points on my favorites’ list. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford’s voice is so calming and reassuring. Dr. Bradford cultivates a relaxing atmosphere so that listeners feel not only comfortable and vulnerable, but open to being challenged and learning something new.
Therapy for Black Girls is the second of my favorite podcasts at the moment!
Unlocking Us (Lifestyle)
I’m new to Dr. Brené Brown’s podcast but I am not new to her work. (I love Dr. Brown’s book, The Gifts of Imperfection.”) I started listening to Unlocking Us when Dr. Brown featured two episodes concerning the bestseller Little Fires Everywhere, one with the author Celeste Ng and the other with stars Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon. I’m looking forward to exploring more episodes.
If you listen to Unlocking Us, what episodes do you recommend?
Special Mention: Morning Mindset (Christian Daily Devotional) (Religious)
This podcast is short yet effective at about six minutes for each episode. The host, Carey Green, reads a portion of scripture from the Bible, discusses the scripture, then ends with a prayer. It’s the perfect way to clear my mind, especially when I’m short on time!
