3 Easy Affirmation Writing Tips

If you're afraid to write your own affirmations, consider this post your sign to start! Writing affirmations can seem difficult, intimidating even, at first. I know the struggle! I refused to write my own affirmation at first because I would compare my affirmations to others I saw on TikTok and Instagram. If you are comparing your affirmations to those of others, STOP. Affirmations do not have to be long and difficult. Here are 3 easy affirmation writing tips to help you along your journey.

Here are some helpful tips if you're in the beginning of your affirmations journey (because there’s nothing more powerful than being intentional about your self-growth):

“I am”

Start with "I am..." statements. There is so much power in speaking life over yourself and declaring who you are and what comprises your essence and being. The words do not have to be complicated. They can be as easy as I am whole. I am wonderful. I am amazing. I am wonderfully made. I am worthy. I am more than enough. As I mention in this post, the important thing about affirmations is that they are relevant to you and your life. Your affirmations should trigger something at your core, whether it empowers, encourages, or challenges you. So the word(s) at the end of your “I am” statements should be personal, but not necessarily complicated.

Word Bank.

Anyone remember word banks from elementary school?

Brainstorm a word bank for your own reference when drafting your affirmation. I created my own word bank by think of "power" words that either spark light and positivity or trigger something at my core. Some words in my word bank are: elevate, choose, shine, power, love, light, joy, peace, abundance, and clarity.

Your words might change over time. Remember, your affirmations should be personal to you and your life. So the words I use in my affirmations change as I grow and encounter different life experiences. Right now, I am focused on controlling my energy. So the words I listed above from my word bank relate to positivity and energy.

Also, if you are still struggling to create your own word bank, I’ll let you in on a secret.

Reading.

Reading books, articles, and blog posts help give me the vocabulary to voice my thoughts and feelings to put them in affirmations.

Practice.

I recently had a conversation with someone who asked how I believe my affirmations. I haven't always felt that way. At first, I felt corny (for the lack of a better word), awkward, and fraudulent. However, writing my affirmations and stating them aloud felt more natural over time, especially after realizing that I have to speak life and positivity over myself.

Practice makes perfect! If you feel awkward when writing your affirmations, you are not alone! Write your affirmations throughout your planner, sticky notes, calendars, and work desk. The key is to surround yourself with your own positive and encouraging words. You got this!
