How to Choose Your 2022 Word of the Year

Can you believe 2021 is almost over? My word of the year for 2021 is no. I picked no to help block out (and say no to) distractions to focus on my goals. It worked! I accomplished so much this year -- moving, launching my business, and even starting a new job. My word of the year morphed into something more. I also needed to say no to myself -- no to negative thinking and negative self-talk. Everyone should have a word of the yea to help guide them through and focus on their goals! Here's how to find and choose your 2022 word of the year.

Review Your Goals and Intentions

Now is the time to look at your New Year Resolutions, goals, and intentions. Review and reflect on these goals. Here are a few questions to ask yourself while reviewing your year:

  1. Be honest with yourself. How did you do with your goals and intentions this year?

  2. What went well this year?

  3. What did you struggle with this year?

  4. What do you want to change this year?

  5. What habits or goals do you keep putting off? What can you do next year to achieve those goals or habits?

  6. What's keeping you stuck?

Look for Inspiration

It's time for the fun part! You can find inspiration for your word of the year anywhere. The key is to be present and mindful throughout your day, which is easier said than done these days. I found my 2022 word of the year while listening to a podcast while walking Timber on a random Tuesday morning. As I listened to the podcast and tried to stop Timber from chasing squirrels, the podcasters said something so profound that it stopped me in my tracks. I knew that I needed the word immediately.

I encourage you to have the same approach when looking for your word of the year because inspiration is everywhere! From books to podcasts and even conversations, you never know when you'll come across your word of the year.

(If you're stuck, check out my IG feed! Every month (except for Nov), I post about my word of the month and encourage people to comment on the word they chose to guide their month.)

Fully Commit to Your 2022 Word of the Year

How do you know when you found your word of the year? It's honestly hard to say. As cliche as this sounds, though, you'll know. The word will feel right!

But if you can't choose between two or three words, stick with your gut and use the remaining words as words of the month! (My words of the month tend to be related to my word of the year. All the words fit within my overall intent to motivate myself as I go throughout the year.)

Finally, commit to your word by reminding yourself daily. Use text messages, phone reminders, sticky notes, or even your daily reflection or journaling habit to remind yourself of your word of the year. Build your goals and intentions around your word!

That's it! If you're ahead of the game and you already found your 2022 word of the year, comment below!

Stay tuned because I'll be announcing my 2022 word of the year soon (and I'm really excited about this one). Until next time, take care of yourself!
