5 Horror Movies and TV Shows You Should Watch
It's October! Although life looks vastly different this year, there are plenty of other ways we can get into the Halloween spirit and celebrate at home. Here are 5 horror movies and tv shows you should watch to "celebrate" Halloween:
1. American Horror Story: Murder House
American Horror Story is an anthology series by Ryan Murphy (who also produced Glee). While I enjoy most of the seasons of AHS, Murder House is the scariest. The story line is captivating and has a few surprises sprinkled throughout the season. This season is definitely one to watch at night and in the dark for the full experience.
If you're looking for the best seasons (and not necessarily the scariest), I loved Hotel, Coven, and Apocalypse!
2. The Nun
I didn't expect to be scared during this movie but it's something about the look of that nun in this movie that scares me! The Nun is part of the Conjuring series universe, which follows a ghost hunter/medium couple, Ed and Lorraine Warren. (The Conjuring is based off a true story!) I enjoy all of the movies in the Conjuring series universe, but The Nun is the best (in this case, the scariest).
3. Insidious 1, 2 and 4
The Insidious universe follows a psychic, Elise, and her ghost-hunting partners as they assist people with suspected hauntings in their homes. The first Insidious movie is the scariest, in my opinion, but I genuinely enjoy the other movies in this series! Actually, the first two movies are the scariest, followed by the fourth installment, then the third.
I purposely skipped the third Insidious movie because it's simply not scary (and I didn't like the main character).
4. The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House is so good. There are so many unexpected twists and turns that I had to rewatch the series multiple times to get the full effect. Plus, when you watch closely, you'll see surprises lurking in the background. The story follows four siblings as they navigate adulthood after growing up in a haunted house.
(Netflix recently release the second installment in The Haunting anthology: The Haunting of Bly Manor. Bly Manor is not as scary as Hill House, but is good in its own way.)
5. Hereditary
I'm saving the best for last.
I watch a lot of horror movies. A lot of "horror" movies are predictable once you become a frequent watcher. So stereotypical jump scares just don't cut it anymore.
I'd seen vague references to Hereditary, but simply never watched it. So when my sister, who is also an avid horror fan, recommended the movie, I finally sat down to watch it. By myself. At night. In the dark.
This movie scared tf out of me.
I couldn't predict the jump scares because I was so captivated. I was too busy watching the movie and trying to figure out what was going on to predict any typical scare. The plot is also creepy because it involves such an evil spirit story line. (Evil spirit/haunting is the only (potentially) scary sub-genre to me. Anything else (zombie, disease, gory, etc.) is simply entertaining.)
So if you're looking to be scared this Halloween, check out Hereditary. I always recommend Hereditary as a must-watch movie to celebrate Halloween!
