self-care & breath work: new content series

Before we begin…

Let’s take this moment to take a few deep breaths. We’ll close our eyes, breathe in for 5 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, release for 5 seconds. Then we’ll repeat 2 more times! Let’s do it!

(For my skeptics out there, give it a try!)

How do you feel? Does your body feel more relaxed than you did before we took a second to be present and breathe? That’s the power of breath work.

what is breath work?

Let’s start from the beginning. What exactly is breath work?

This article from WebMD describes breath work as a technique “to release toxins and stress when you breathe out and nourish your mind and body when you breathe in.” I like to think of breath work as strategically using deep breathing techniques to achieve different goals. Like the WebMD article says, breath work can release toxins and stress. Whether you’re dealing with stress at work, stressful finances, or physical pain, breath work is an inexpensive self-care tool that can help you in a variety of situations.

How is breath work self-care?

Yep, breath work can help you get rid of stress. But that’s truly just the beginning!

You can use breath work to manage your emotions, whether it’s anger, stress, frustration, etc. Even if you’re not experiencing those emotions, you can use breath work to quiet your mind and take a few moments to be still and present. If you’re having a rough day, practicing breath work is a great way to pause and shift your mindset.

How do I know this? Breath work has helped me personally in my self-care journey.

Full transparency: I sometimes struggle to manage my emotions. I also work in a stressful profession. When I am intentional about breath work, my emotions and tough situations are easier to manage. I’ve talked endlessly about affirmations, but I want to share about this practice that has helped me in my self-care journal.
